42 Mandarin Phrases for Travel in China

Many travelers can currently enter China visa-free for up to 30 days (tourism, business, family visits, exchange or transit), depending on nationality. For example, Brazilian ordinary-passport holders are exempt until 31 December 2026, per the Chinese Embassy in Brazil's notice. Check the rules for your own passport before you fly, because they can change.

Outside big hotels and airports, few people speak English. These 42 HSK-level phrases cover the essentials: ordering food, paying, taking the subway or a taxi, hotels and emergencies. Each phrase has Chinese characters (to show on your phone), pinyin with tones (to read aloud) and the English meaning.

Tip: if your pronunciation fails, show the characters on your screen. It almost always works.

5 practical tips before you fly

  1. Payment: almost everything in China is paid by QR code. Alipay (支付宝) and WeChat Pay (微信支付) accept foreign cards. Set them up before the trip and carry some cash as a backup.
  2. Internet: many Western apps and sites do not work normally in China. Download maps, an offline translator and anything else you need beforehand.
  3. Address in Chinese: ask your hotel for the address written in characters and keep a screenshot. It is the easiest way to take a taxi.
  4. Tones matter: 买 (mǎi, to buy) and 卖 (mài, to sell) differ only in tone. Listening to audio helps more than reading pinyin.
  5. Numbers: learn 1 to 10 (一 yī, 二 èr, 三 sān, 四 sì, 五 wǔ, 六 liù, 七 qī, 八 bā, 九 jiǔ, 十 shí). They cover prices, times and hotel rooms.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit China in 2026?

Citizens of Brazil with an ordinary passport are currently exempt from a visa for stays of up to 30 days (tourism, business, family visits, exchange and transit) until 31 December 2026, according to the Chinese Embassy in Brazil. Rules differ by nationality and can change, so check the official notice for your passport before you travel.

Can I get by with English only?

In international hotels and airports, yes. In restaurants, taxis and neighborhood shops, often not. A few Mandarin phrases and the characters on your phone screen make a big difference.

How do I learn the pronunciation of these phrases?

With Mandarin audio and repetition. Pinyin shows the tones, but listening is what makes them stick.
